Recent Additions to the Temple

Recently Lama Yeshe gave a talk about the items in the sanctuary. She described leaving ‘the dust of the world’ behind as we take off our shoes and enter the temple through the outside red doors.

In entering the sanctuary, Yeshe pointed out that the doors can never make noise as people come and go. These doors were created by Dougal Haines of Terrebonne, Oregon. People prepare their minds upon entering, often looking towards the Buddha and bowing. At the same time, participants enter the space of their own hearts to find a calming, "not ordinary" presence.

A bell rings to announce the arrival of the teachers. As the Lamas enter the room, those who wish to will stand and hold hands together in a sign of respect. Only when the teachers are seated does everyone sit. There is a relaxed environment of mindfulness, as thousands of years of blessing, intentions and aspirations join together. Recalling the Buddha, we also recall our own Buddha potential. Everything in the room is designed to help us focus our heart and minds.

First seen is usually the image of the Buddha in the front of the room . We remember that thousands have made the same journey that the Buddha made. Each of us has the seeds of awakening inside.

Small windows look out to the hills and there is a view of the wetlands, bringing restful reflections of nature inside. The lighting is effective and calming.

The ceiling has red beams separating sections of beech wood . The red dolor is a prevalent theme in Tibetan sacred architecture, and is seen again in the four decorative pillars, which represent the large structural pillars common to shrine rooms in Tibet.

The altar contains representations of the three jewels (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha) and three roots (Lamas, Yidams and Dharma Protectors) of our refuge. One example of these aspects of refuge is the statue of the Buddha on the top area of the shrine. He sits in an immovable triangular posture, metaphorically seated on a lotus flower. Using that as our example, we are reminded of how our body can support our mind in sitting quietly.

The right hand of the Buddha touches the earth. On the night of his enlightenment, the Buddha's serenity invited animals to surround him. The entire planet resonated to indicate his achievement of realization and the limitless quiet mind he had developed. We are reminded in that gesture, that the whole earth is our support for the quest toward realization and limitless quiet mind.

Ceiling light in Lobby

Kangling (Tibetan: རྐང་གླིང།; Wylie: rkang-gling) is the Tibetan word for a trumpet or horn made out of a thighbone. (It may also be made out of wood or metal.)

The dungchen (Tibetan: དུང་ཆེན།dung chen) is a long trumpet or horn used in Tibetan Buddhist ceremonies. It is the most widely used instrument in Tibetan Buddhist culture. It is often played in pairs or multiples, and the sound is compared to the singing of elephants.

The silnyen is a Tibetan percussion instrument in the form of a cymbal with a small or no central boss. The silnyen is struck by horizontal movement and is used in Buddhist rites.

The rolmo is a horizontal ritual cymbal used by Tibetan monks in Buddhist rites.^[1] It has a broad central boss and is struck vertically, in contrast to the Silnyen.

STATUES ARRIVE FROM NEPAL

Statues were commissioned to be made in Nepal
of bronze with gold leaf.
Ted Sundin organized the fund raiser for this project.
Eventually a special platform will be built
for them in the front of the room.

The largest statue is of Sukhasiddhi, who arrived at Buddhism late in life. She lived as an impoverished housewife and mother of six children until the age of fifty-nine. She was thrown out of her home by her husband and children, who were irate at what they considered her misplaced generosity to a stranger who came begging at their door. She wandered westward to Oddiyana (Swat Valley in modern Pakistan), where she acquired a measure of grain, with which she made alcohol. Her business proved a modest success, and she allowed herself to again be generous, this time to a female adept. Sukhasiddhi's gift of free alcohol intrigued the adept, Virupa, who asked whether his surprising benefactor wanted to receive Buddhist teaching. She did

Upon receiving empowerment and instruction from Virupa, Sukhasiddhi, then a sixty-one-year-old, attained full enlightenment that very evening. Like Niguma, her body became rainbowlike. Niguma is remembered as a wrathful, dark-brown woman who wore bone ornaments, whereas Sukhasiddhi is portrayed as a peaceful, light-skinned sixteen-year-old.

Sukhasiddhi is one of two women teachers credited with providing founding teachings for the Tibetan Buddhist Kagyu lineage. She is known as a ‘wisdom dakini’, and is still considered exceptionally kind, empowering and aiding any who call upon her as part of their spiritual journey.

Origins of Tara According to Buddhist tradition, Tara was born out of the tears of compassion of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. It is said that he wept as he looked upon the world of suffering beings, and his tears formed a lake in which a lotus sprung up. When the lotus opened, the goddess Tara was revealed. White Tara displays serenity and grace. Together, the Green and White Taras symbolize the unending compassion of the goddess who labors day and night to relieve suffering.

In Buddhist religious practice, Green Tara's primary role is savioress. She is believed to help her followers overcome dangers, fears and anxieties, and she is especially worshipped for her ability to overcome the most difficult of situations. Green Tara is intensely compassionate and acts quickly to help those who call upon her.

White Tara (Sanskrit: Sitatara; Tibetan: Sgrol-dkar), above, is sometimes called the Mother of all Buddhas and she represents the motherly aspect of compassion. Her white color signifies purity, wisdom and truth.

In iconography, White Tara often has seven eyes – in addition to the usual two, she has a third eye on her forehead and one on each of her hands and feet. This symbolizes her vigilance and ability to see all the suffering in the world. The "Tara of Seven Eyes" is the form of the goddess especially popular in Mongolia.

White Tara wears silk robes and scarves that leave her slender torso and rounded breasts uncovered in the manner of ancient India. Like Green Tara, she is richly adorned with jewels.

White Tara is seated in the diamond lotus position, with the soles of her feet pointed upward. Her posture is one of grace and calm. Her right hand makes the boon-granting gesture and her left hand is in the protective mudra. In her left hand, White Tara holds an elaborate lotus flower that contains three blooms. The first is in seed and represents the past Buddha Kashyapa; the second is in full bloom and symbolizes the present Buddha Shakyamuni; the third is ready to bloom and signifies the future Buddha Maitreya. These three blooms symbolize that Tara is the essence of the three Buddhas.

In religious practice, White Tara is believed to help her followers overcome obstacles, especially those that inhibit the practice of religion. She is also associated with longevity.

FIRST ANNUAL BODHISATTVA NIGHT

FIRST ANNUAL BODHISATTVA NIGHT was last night.
This was an event put together by the children. A Bodhisattva is one who vows never to abandon another sentient being and aspires to bring about the benefit of others above even his or her own. One aim was to help children and others see that the Bodhisattva ideal is in some way present in most of the world's religious traditions and is a key method in our own tradition for overcoming the causes of suffering. The children explored this theme through story telling.
There are grand, mythical, larger-than-life (even canonized) Bodhisattvas, and there are ordinary folks like us, moving along in that direction as best as we can --and everything in between.
The Middle Way Youth Group asked for donations of canned goods for the emergency food shelter.

Moon Disks

Sangha member and local artist Marie Maretska has completed two more rows of traditional decoration for KSC. The first was mounted last May--the full moon disks made of enamel on copper. The second set was recently applied to the building. They are called Ga-Kyil, which is the Tibetan word for Wheel of Joy. They encompass the joy of recognizing the interdependent and spacious nature of the mind and of all things.

It was hard work shoveling and raking and sweeping and digging to bring the landscape to lush life. Some of the helpers were Nathalie Prettyman, Joanie Keller, Nancy Morgan (Norbu), Sandra Wetzel, Shirley Lawyer-Hillman, Edeltraud Muroki, Jake Myers, Valerie Muroki, David Kennedy, Toni Angel, Preston Chase, and Phyliss Douglas. Many of the volunteers weren't part of the KSC sangha before this temple was built. Our community has grown rapidly with so many new faces and helping hands.

Stupa Added to the front of the Temple

Lama Chodrak, the executive director of the worldwide Kagyu Monlam (prayer festival), has made a generous gift of a fully consecrated stupa to KSC. The stupa was made by Richard Jackson and Monica Martinez of Questa, New Mexico, and the Lamas were able to bring it back to KSC at the end of their retreat. Clay Colley and Tom Stammers are finishing it with the traditional painted decorations. It will stand in the center of the stone mandala of the front patio when complete.

A gong now hangs from above. This allows the lamas to let practitioners below know when they are leaving their apartment and coming downstairs for teachings and meditations.

Thank you for the front and back page engaging story "Buddhist temple opens" (June 17). What a credit to the citizens of Ashland that Lamas Pema and Yeshe encouraged by Lodru Rinpoche brought their vision to reality. At an open house for donors, the Lamas thanked architect Carlos Delgado, who designed the building, builder John Fields, as well as Clay Colley, who coordinated the numerous volunteers, along with many others who helped bring about this generous facility as a gift to humanity.

Reading John Darling's article, through the eyes of an architect, I was struck by the absence of credit for architect of record Carlos Delgado. In the United States the role of architects as form givers is frequently passed over or misunderstood. In Kagyu Sukha Chöling, Delgado deserves credit for skillfully bringing forward the indigenous idiom of Tibetan architecture and incorporating it into a temple for our time that clearly identifies its lineage, while being harmonious with its neighbors, as well as being energy efficient and built to last for generations.

This is no easy task, I have experienced firsthand the profound challenges of successful architectural design. To design a building of merit and integrity like Kagyu Sukha Choling, an architect must be a Renaissance person of many talents — a diplomat to communicate effectively with the client and multiple inter-disciplinary colleagues, not to mention builders and building officials, through the innumerable complex issues involved in the design, detailing, execution and financing of such a building project. Architects cannot fulfill the needs of the user while shaping the structure appropriately and gracefully without a broad knowledge of history and culture. In addition, an architect must understand structural and mechanical engineering and a host of other disciplines.

Since ancient times, critics have wrestled with guidelines. In the first century BCE, Roman architect Vitruvius wrote that a building must be solid, useful and beautiful. Frank Lloyd Wright, who cut his teeth in the Chicago School under Louis Sullivan and went on to create the uniquely American "Prairie Houses," coined the phrase, "Form follows function." Ludwig Mies van der Rohe of the Bauhaus and International School pledged, the oft-forgotten, "Less is more."

The lack of an indigenous architecture as a foundation has posed a challenge for architects in North America, leading to borrowing of styles from other times and places. Chicago architects Sullivan and Richardson drew from the Renaissance Palazzos of 14th century Florence for the first American skyscrapers; The Classic Revival was derived from Greek and Roman architecture; Frank Lloyd Wright and the brothers Green and Green developed the Craftsman Style from the comfy Arts and Crafts Movement in England; West Coast towns like San Francisco, Ferndale and Ashland were styled from pattern books of Victorian Carpenter Gothic designs. Here in Ashland on Bear Creek, horribly kitsch Tudor half-timber was, until recently, considered fitting for commerce. To add to the hodgepodge of styles in 1925 the dream of an impressive hotel, like those in the big cities back East, brought us the Mark Anthony Hotel (Lithia Springs) in violation of Main Street's cozy scale. All across America, Los Angeles' own "Googie Architecture" brought us themes like Taco Bell or the arches of McDonald's.

My hat is off to the Lamas of Kagyu Sukha Chöling, architect Carlos Delgado, consulting architect Joyce Ward, contractor John Field, volunteer coordinator Clay Colley and the entire team for a superb job of meeting today's needs with a building that fulfills Vitruvius' challenge of Firmness, Fitness and Delight, Wright's Form Follows Function and even the restraint of Mies' Less is More.

Inner and Outer Beauty at Kagyu Sukha Chöling

A culmination of faith, determination and cooperation by a community of Buddhists and non-Buddhists has transformed a vision into reality. Kagyu Sukha Chöling, a center for the practice and study of Tibetan Buddhism now has a permanent home in Ashland, Oregon. Dedicated to supporting individuals at any stage of their spiritual journey, the KSC Tibetan Buddhist Center opened in June 2010.

When Lama Pema Clark and Lama Yeshe Parke came to Ashland in 2000 at the request of their teacher, Venerable Lama Lodru Rinpoche, they had no idea what awaited them. First meeting in private homes, then in a leased house, it soon became apparent that even the house was too small to meet the needs of their rapidly growing group. In retrospect, one might say their destiny was catching up with them sooner than later.

The search for a more appropriate location led the sangha through an extended process, exploring options of renting vs. building. Ultimately the desire for more adequate space escalated the group into property owners with building approval for an authentic Tibetan Buddhist Center.

Two aspects of the project are of great significance. In keeping with the Buddhist philosophy of living in harmony with the earth, the building was planned to be environmentally sustainable. The project was a community effort by local architects, contractors, suppliers and laborers with volunteers playing a major role. Ultimately, 100 men, women and children donated many hours to perform a vast array of services, saving close to $200,000 in building costs.

Carlos Delgado, architect, explains that the design of the 6000 sq. ft. structure is a fairly simple passive building—a pioneering, mixed-use structure, utilizing green and sustainable architecture and construction. Passive heating and cooling methods rely on occupants’ modulation of systems; advanced framing techniques save wood and provide more insulation space; energy-efficient lighting, solar hot water with maximum energy-efficient appliances all conserve water and electricity. As an added touch of beauty, regionally adapted plants are featured in a low-water-use landscape and contemplative garden adjacent to nearby wetlands.

Clay Colley, semi-retired building contractor and sangha member, coordinated and supervised the volunteers, whose efforts began in earnest after the general contractor completed the bulk of the structure. He explains that a local man donated trees from his property that he had cut and dried to be milled for use in all the beams and posts.

“I’ve had the satisfaction of teaching people with few building skills to prepare and paint the inside and outside of the building, finish the concrete floors and stain all woodwork, including boards and beams. Countless hours with huge savings. Volunteers also have been key in the massive amount of cleanup, separating plastic, paper, wood and concrete—striving to recycle or reuse everything.”

Clay concludes, “Everyone wants to have their hands on this building. Our connection to our teachers and to the center has become so enriched by this experience. It’s been an opportunity to practice our intentions. Putting our efforts into this building has come back a thousand times.”
Other volunteers support these sentiments, mentioning the camaraderie that has developed among the volunteers of all ages, the excitement and joy they feel to be part of the vision, whether or not they are Buddhists. According to one retiree, “In this third chapter of my life I want to be in service to causes that are ethical. This community feels like home.” Another man who appeared out of the blue, offering to lay 7 1/2 tons of stone, explains his contribution of time and skill, “When I finally understood my purpose and started giving away my gifts, everything came back to me.”

Nevertheless, this creation of a beautiful and unique home for peaceful and compassionate practice remains secondary to the teachings and activities that have also grown. Monthly Sunday meditations are open to all, alternating Tonglen, Calm Abiding and Silent Sit. Calm Abiding is also offered on some weekday evenings. Other Tibetan style meditations such as Chenrezig, Mahakala, Green Tara and Four Tantric Deities occur regularly, with practice support groups provided as well. Two weekly classes with varied topics occur in fall, winter and spring as well as day-long retreats on site along with three and seven day retreats off site. DharmaKids, a group of children ages 5-12, meets twice monthly to learn mindfulness and compassion, the basic tenets of Buddhism, through stories, meditation, exercises and games. A pre-teen group is planned for the fall and eventually a teen group will be added.

I went to speak with the lamas at Ashland's new Tibetan Buddhist temple on Tuesday.

I wanted to ask them why they decided to build a green temple. I'm curious about the ways that spirituality and sustainability overlap for some people.

I don't think you have to be religious or spiritual to be eco-conscious. I'm all for atheists and agnostics — and everyone else — planting gardens. We need all the help we can get.

For some people, though, caring for the environment is a way of communing with something larger than themselves. For others, spirituality gives meaning to environmental work.

I caught Lama Pema Clark just as she was stepping out of the temple to take her Australian shepherd, Dancer, on a walk through the Railroad District.

Clark is one of two resident teachers at the Kagyu Sukha Choling.

She explained the Buddhist philosophy on the environment: "From the Buddhist perspective, we believe we're interdependent with all of life, and so, from that standpoint, we should do our best to be good stewards and be in good relationship with all beings and the environment.

"We want to honor that interdependent spirit."

The 6,000-square-foot temple at 109 Clear Creek Drive uses the same amount of energy as a traditional 1,500-square-foot house, Clark said.

It's built with local and sustainably harvested wood, it has low-flow water fixtures and it uses passive heating and cooling methods.

An environmental committee has been formed to determine which cleaning and paper products should be used in the temple. And there are plans to install solar panels, a rain garden and a contemplative garden.

Beginning in early July, in addition to the classes and teachings offered, the lamas plan to allow anyone to sit in the temple once or twice a week.

Clark thinks people can sense the difference between a building that's been sustainably constructed and one that's been built using traditional methods and materials.

"I think people definitely feel the elemental connection," she said. "People say they feel peaceful and happy when they walk in — constantly that's what they're saying."

Clark said more than 1,200 people came to the temple's open house on Saturday. That's a lot of peaceful and happy people.

James Olson, "the stone guy," was one of them. Olson, who operates Stoneworks by James, was arranging giant slabs of Rocky Mountain quartzite and Oregon's Iron Mountain shale on the temple's porch when I visited Tuesday.

The Native American Buddhist spoke about the environment using the language of his trade.

"I believe in respecting the environment and taking care of what's around us, so we don't go and destroy this rock we live on," he said. "Because then what will we do?"

Olson's ancestors, from the Shasta tribe, have lived in the Rogue Valley for more than 6,000 years, he said.

Sustainable building is about taking future generations into account, Clark said.

"We wanted to sustainably build for centuries, instead of decades," she said.

I hope by then we'll still be around. And I hope we'll be off oil, instead of covered in it — but that's a topic for another column.

Clark invited me to the temple's silent meditation, from 6 to 7 p.m. today. And I might just go. In the silence, I'll be listening to nature.

Decked out in a colorful array of spiritual artifacts, silk wall hangings and golden Buddhas, Ashland's Kagyu Sukha Choling has opened its doors for meditation and classes — and will hold a public grand opening on Saturday.

The $1.5 million temple was the dream of two Tibetan Buddhist lamas, Yeshe Parke and Pema Clark, who arrived in Ashland 10 years ago and began building a spiritual community filled with dedicated donors and volunteers eager to do much of the construction work.

Teachings began June 6 under the guidance of KSC's spiritual director, Lama Lodru Rinpoche of San Francisco.

"Everyone was smiling and had tears of joy," Clark said. "I tried to introduce him, but I was so happy, I couldn't speak."

Entering the second-floor sanctuary the viewer takes in red accented altars, teaching thrones, candles, statues and painted silk wall hangings portraying the faith's divine beings, including Green Tara, White Tara and the Future Buddha, who regularly incarnates on earth, Clark said.

"So many people come just to look, and they say it makes them happy just to look at it," she said.

When he consecrated the new temple, Rinpoche said it was the first new Tibetan Buddhist temple built in an urban setting on this continent (most are retreats far from cities), and that "it was amazing it's in a small town like Ashland," Clark recalled.

"He reminded us that this temple doesn't belong to KSC or to the religion but that it's for the community," she said. "Anyone can come. Rinpoche also said the Dalai Lama at some point would visit the temple.

Classes are Monday and Tuesday evenings, with meditation Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. The schedule is at kscashland.org and includes special events such as "inner yoga" and a series exploring the meaning of ceremonial objects in the shrine room.

The room, also called the sanctuary, is unabashedly decked out in bright reds, golds and other beautiful colors, Clark noted, because "everything is sacred, so all this color expresses the purity and exceptional beauty of genuine reality — and if you're inspired and uplifted by it, that's very good."

Taking in the three-story, 6,000-square-foot temple, Parke said, "If I'm honest, it's a miracle. Hundreds of people contributed time, energy and skill. I'm overcome. I'm in tears twice a day."

Despite the current recession, contractor John Fields advised the temple be built if money and donated labor could be found, because prices would be more affordable. Just more than $1 million was raised from 500 people, with $600,000 in private loans and fundraising in an ongoing process, Clark said.

"But we're over the hump, now that we've created the building ... and a community has grown out of it," Fields said. "It's energy-efficient and sustainable. It uses less land and transportation than rural temples. It's adapted to the heart of the community and is totally accessible. You can walk to it. It's a 21st century building."

The building's consulting architect, Joyce Ward of Ashland, said the local Buddhist sangha (congregation) "came in early on and said they wanted it all non-toxic, sustainable and honoring of the earth. It was a great expression of how building needs to be now. I was amazed at the army of volunteers and how it's all gone so easily, without the power struggles you might expect ... all setbacks were met with optimism and equanimity. It's a wonderful expression of grounding, plenty and permanence in an impermanent world."

Much of the high-level craftsmanship was donated or given at cost, Clark said, naming many artisans who created the stunning double entry doors, the stained cement floor, the rock walkways, the chic kitchen and other features.

The purpose of the complex, she stresses, is the spiritual journey, which means "an awakening, an inherent quality of our heart and mind, which we describe as being very open with a quality of goodness. Every human being has this essence, which is uncovered and recognized through meditation and contemplation."

KSC has saved approximately $200,000 with donated labor and materials as well as through the work of many volunteers.

Board member Clay Colley has been at the site every day for months, working on the building, as well as organizing and training volunteers.
Carpenter Jake Walsh, a member of the northern sangha, donated a week of his time to work on one of the entry porches.
Dozens of KSC volunteers hand-oiled and rubbed all moldings and doors, scrubbed floors, washed windows, swept, raked, baked cookies, recycled and did dump runs. People (not just Buddhists) just kept walking up to the building and asking, What can I do to help?"

Now Lama Pema says, "So many of you have given time, energy and money. Now, it's your building."

Members and guests arrived at the opening debut of our KSC Meditation Center through a pair of distinguished exterior doors (installed only hours before) into a large and welcoming foyer.

At the far end another pair of hand carved doors beckoned one into the Shrine Room filled with extraordinary beauty – altars, Tangkas, carpets, thrones and the fragrance of an abundance of springtime flowers.

The expansion of windows invited the evening stillness as wetland songbirds settled into their nests.

It was easy to fall into the sacredness of these amazing surroundings!

And then we heard the pair of conch shells announcing the arrival of our beloved Lama Lodru Rinpoche with Lamas Pema and Yeshe.

Their stepping through the front entrance marked the beginning of their long held dream for our Center.

It was clear each of them was deeply touched as they entered the reality of the Shrine Room totally filled with loving faces!

Lama Lodru commended our Sangha for creating a home for the future life of goodness and happiness!

He reminded us that it took many people – some sharing material support and others physical labor - to complete our shared dream!

My favorite is the Green Tara. Tara, whose name means "star" or "she who ferries across," is a Bodhisattva of compassion who manifests in female form. In Tibetan, Tara is known as "Dölma" (Sgrol-ma), or "She Who Saves." In particular she represents compassion in action, since she’s in the process of stepping from her lotus throne in order to help sentient beings.

In order to heat the building there are separate hydraulic heating systems within each floor. As demand for heat becomes known the instant hot water system can immediately send the warm water to the correct floor. In the floors there is plastic tubing every eight inches for the warm water.

The cooling is done by natural convection air. This is facilitated by large ducts that are 8 ft. by 2 ft. These pull air from the cool ground level of the first floor. It is pulled naturally through the ducts towards the attic. It mixes with the air already in the building and recirculates. On the main floor the ceiling is made from imported German beech wood, which meets the standards for European green wood. The beech slats are a half inch apart. The air can circulate through the slats, helping to cool the air.

There is also a fan in the attic to blow out hot air that rises.

It has been an honor to participate in the design process of this sacred space. I have already experienced a profound healing while working on the building. I came to the center on and off for the past several years. I have a long history of Vipassana practice. Tibetan pageantry, however, is beautiful.

In September I received a call from the Lamas to help them with their lighting fixtures. This project is finally going to happen! The building has taken shape.

People have shown up and offered services of various sorts. Claymon is at the helm, guiding many old and new friends who are genuinely excited. The larger community of Buddhists and non-Buddhists has also offered help. We are all very happy to be working on the space--with no fights, arguments,or egos--just healthy communication and a lot of kindness.

The dreadful economy had a very bright side. Many local artisans and true craftspeople are out of work.. These folks are grateful for the opportunity to be creative again and to make something special.

Though creative process has been most healing, watching the Dharma in motion through all the wonderful folks involved in the building took the cake. This has restored my faith in the universe and opened a door to deepen my practice. Another big bonus has been getting to spend so much time with Pema and Yeshe. Personally, I have never felt such joy while working on a project. What a gift the center is to the Dharma.

Hello Interconnected Friends,

Today was a great day at the new center. The weather was accommodating for the stucco plasterers to finish all of their work and remove ALL scaffold from the building site !! They have cleaned up the decks and removed all equipment to their next job. What a remarkable difference in appearance and colors on the building.

The block masons have created the outline for planters in the front and a volunteer stone mason is laying flagstone outside of the lower entry on the wetlands side.

Next week will bring about more exterior changes on the elevation of the ground on the main entry and parking lot in preparation for paving. The entire downstairs walls and woodwork may be completely painted out and the two upstairs showers will be finished for our Lamas and visiting teachers.

This weekend will be our chance to clean all inside and outside windows, sand and paint all risers and skirts of both stairwells, touch up a little oiling of woodwork, paint some trim work downstairs and do an extensive cleaning on the interior and exterior. Generally speaking, just stand around in awe of this dream!

Dearest Volunteers,

When we signed up to help out at the center we could have never known what that would have looked like, exactly, until it all happened, and look at us now!!!!!! The center is changing daily right before our eyes with the most amazing efforts from the paid workers and all of our volunteers!

Many thanks go to our four carpenters who have also made contributions by helping in so many ways, who are now working full time with their carpentry skills making our center solid and beautiful. Also, Bruce and Sat have put major effort into our project these last few weeks, helping immensely. So many sangha volunteers have contributed so much for many, many weeks, turning out in mass! Congratulations to everyone for doing such a beautiful job oiling all of the finish lumber, and completing so many other major tasks. We have got everyone working again and have made many people very happy handling every board many times and making the center even more personal.

Now our efforts will move back to some wall painting of the stairs and hallways, kitchen, closets, etc. We will be cleaning all of the glass on the window panes and filling nail holes created by installation of all the finish trim. I am not available until Friday, but my on-going "to do" list is posted on the back of the entry door.

Many are simple tasks, materials and tools are easy to find. Ask a carpenter about the list and they can get you started.

This weekend there will be plenty to do painting and cleaning so come at 9 a.m. on Saturday and we will keep the energy flowing.

Greetings fellow sangha mates,

We have a really good week going at the new center. The dry-wallers are mudding and taping the second and third levels and will texture the third floor very soon. The second and third levels will be ready to prime and paint, hopefully, by Monday. Anyone interested in working during the week days please give me a call. We may be able to put a prime coat on the walls of the shrine room and foyer this weekend. A coat of earth-plaster will be applied over this prime coat sometime in February.

Tomorrow we will receive an order of wood that we can oil this Friday and Saturday that will be used as part of the window frames and window sills. We will finish the oiling of all the windows upstairs.

At the end of next week, we will be receiving a major amount of Beech hardwood that will be used for all window trim, door trim and baseboards. We need to put a coat of oil on all of this wood before it is installed. We will also receive all of the Beech wood boards that will later be installed on the ceiling of the shrine room. All of this wood must have two coats of oil. As you can see, we are about to enter into a major phase of the finish carpentry and finish painting, so I am hoping for some volunteers to be able to help during the week beginning January 25th.

The downstairs walls have been completely primed and painted. Very soon we will lift up the plywood on the floors and begin cleaning the concrete so it will accept the acrylic stain color. We will probably use a floor buffer, so it won't be too difficult. I am meeting with Jim Slade on Monday and we will discuss the staining of the floor process and
scheduling.

A lot is happening in the shrine room. The steel beams on the ceiling are being wrapped in wood and the grid-work for the "dropped" ceiling is in place. Everything above the 'dropped' ceiling needs to be sprayed with black paint. We will mask off the shrine room windows this weekend in preparation of this painting.

As you can see, major movement is happening, in a big way, all over the building. It is really fun for all of us to see it happening. So come join in the party Sat. the 23rd at 9 a.m. for an all day work fest!
